The Terry Furlong Scholarship
Terry Furlong
(1942-2002) was a major and inspiring figure in English teaching
for more than 30 years.
He played key
roles in all the intersecting progressive movements in the profession
during that period. These movements aimed to make the curriculum
more relevant to children's lives; to help children to become makers
and shapers of language, and therefore makers and shapers of their
future lives; to introduce children to literature which most teachers
in previous generations had thought beyond their powers of comprehension.
Terry led the
movement to change examinations in English, so that a wider range
of texts was studied, so that children produced writing far more
diverse in scope than previously, and so that spoken as well as
written language was assessed. Terry's intent was always to raise
standards of achievement, to marry old concerns about correctness
in writing and the study of a conventional canon of great literature
with a new excitement about the making of meaning in language and
about diversifying learners' encounters with it.
Terry's achievements
in English teaching were the outcomes of a vision of education as
a provider of opportunities, of instruments of power, to learners
on whom in the past the education system had largely turned its
back. So he took particular pleasure in seeing working-class children,
and children from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds, gaining opportunities,
getting their hands on the instruments of power, as a result of
their engagement with the kind of curriculum, teaching methods and
assessment system which he did so much to promote.
Since Terry
died of cancer in May 2002, his partner, Gabriel Genest, his friends,
colleagues and family have been discussing how to create a memorial
to his life which would best reflect Terry's enthusiasms and beliefs,
and of which he would have approved.
When a close
friend and colleague of Terry's, Ros Moger, died in 1999, Terry
was a member of a group which set up The Ros Moger Scholarship,
which supports post-graduate students in southern Africa. This scholarship
fund has supported eight students so far, in two groups, pursuing
studies in language in education and gender in education. Thanks
to the generosity of contributors, the fund contains more than £30,000,
and is in a position to continue to make grants for many years to
come. The fund is administered by the Canon Collins Educational
Trust for Southern Africa, and benefits from the Trust's charitable
status.
We are setting
up a new fund, to be called The Terry Furlong Scholarship. It will
also be administered by the Canon Collins Trust, and will therefore
also have charitable status. Because Terry and Ros were such good
friends, and shared such common ideals, The Terry Furlong Scholarship
will be a kind of sibling to The Ros Moger Scholarship, but will
be a separate, independent fund, to which people can contribute
as a specific memorial to Terry's life.
The Terry Furlong
Scholarship will support post-graduate study or research by students
from southern Africa, in southern Africa, in the areas of language,
literature, drama and media study in education. The aim is to raise
funds on the same scale as those raised for The Ros Moger Scholarship,
which experience tells us will be enough to support four or five
full-time students a year. We shall select these students from a
short list provided by the Canon Collins Trust from the hundreds
of grant applications the Trust considers every year.
We invite all
those whose lives were enriched by their contact with Terry, and
all those who share the beliefs he held, to contribute to the fund.
Payment can
be made by cheque, made out to CCETSA/The Terry Furlong Scholarship,
or by standing order, or both. Donations of all sizes are welcome.
Most welcome of all are an initial contribution, to help establish
the fund quickly, and a regular monthly, quarterly or annual payment
thereafter.
It is very important
that cheques are accompanied by a filled-in Gift Aid Declaration
(the first part of the form below), and that standing order contributions
are made by filling in both parts of the form. Cheques and forms
should then be sent to CCETSA, 22 The Ivories, 6 Northampton Street,
London N1 2HY. This, as the form explains, will enable the value
of contributions to be increased by 27% under the Gift Aid Scheme.
We will put
our plans into action as soon as we accumulate a sum of money which
will generate a return adequate to fulfil them. We will of course
acknowledge all contributions, and provide contributors with information
about how their gift is being used.
Thank you very
much for your generosity.
